Understanding the Communion of Saints
The Communion of Saints doctrine teaches that death does not sever the bonds of Christian love and prayer. This spiritual reality encompasses three dimensions:
Shared spiritual goods: All members of Christ’s body share in the sacraments, graces, and merits earned through faithfulness
Mutual intercession: Saints in heaven pray for us, we pray for souls in purgatory, and we support one another on earth
Common purpose: Every member works toward the same goal-eternal union with God
When we understand mary and the saints within this framework, their role becomes clear. They are not mediators who replace Christ but friends who accompany us on the journey home to God. Just as we ask living friends to pray for us, we ask our heavenly friends to intercede on our behalf.
